BROOKLYN — The notorious drug kingpin El Chapo is being held in Brooklyn and awaiting trial, officials said Friday.

Infamous drug cartel leader Joaquín Guzmán Loera, who has been in prison in Mexico following his daring escape a from a maximum security jail in 2015, was extradited on Thursday, Mexico’s Secretary of Foreign Relations said in a press release.

He arrived in New York Thursday, officials said.

Loera will reportedly be housed in a Brooklyn federal jail during his trial at the Eastern District courthouse.

He was sent to the U.S. after a Mexican federal court denied a motion to block extradition.

He was scheduled to be arraigned Friday afternoon, prosecutors said.
