CONCOURSE — The Bronx mother charged with throwing her 6-month-old girl out of a window and killing her repeatedly moaned "Oh God" while being led out of court on Wednesday.
Fearon was dressed in a gray sweatsuit and declined to testify before a grand jury in her second court appearance. She did not speak until she was leaving the room.
"Oh God, oh God, oh God," she said. "Jesus, man, help me. Help me. Oh Jesus."
The judge had ordered Fearon to undergo a psychiatric exam during her arraignment on Friday, but the results of that will probably not be ready for another three weeks, according to court officials.
Her lawyer Tom Kenniff declined to comment on the specifics of Fearon's mental health but suggested that she may not have been herself at the time of the murder.
"Common sense would dictate that anytime an otherwise law abiding mother of four is accused of something this horrific, that you must consider whether the actions are truly her own or whether they are the result of some sinister force that may have taken ahold of her mind," he said.
He also encouraged the public to be empathetic about "the seriousness of undiagnosed mental health issues and their often disastrous consequences."
Fearon is being held at Elmhurst Hospital and is due back in court on Nov. 23.
She has been charged with murder for throwing her baby Jahnyla Lawrence out of her sixth floor apartment at 220 Tiebout Ave. on Thursday afternoon.
She had been licensed to operate a family day care center at the same address, but no complaints or violations were filed against her, officials said.
Fearon was heard screaming "We're all going to die" before dropping Lawrence out of the window, and her three other children between ages four and 10 were inside the apartment watching the scene unfold, according to the Bronx District Attorney's Office.
