CRIME BLOTTER: Man Arrested for Carrying Gun During West Indian Day Parade

CROWN HEIGHTS — Acting on a tip from a reveler at the West Indian Day Parade, police arrested a man for carrying an illegal handgun in his pocket during the annual Labor Day event.

A woman told officers working on the parade route around 4 p.m. Monday she saw a man display a gun from inside the pocket of his shorts at the corner of Brooklyn Avenue and Eastern Parkway in Crown Heights.

When officers investigated the man she described, they spotted the gun in his left shorts pocket and arrested him.

Micheal Merritt, 24, was arrested on charges of criminal possession of a loaded firearm, which is a felony. He was ordered held in custody on $10,000 cash bail or $20,000 bond, and is due back in court on Sept. 11, according to court records.

► A 30-year-old man was arrested after police found he was riding a stolen Citi Bike. The man was seen riding the bike share two-wheeler on the sidewalk on the corner of Sterling Street and Nostrand Avenue at 12:30 a.m. on Sept. 3. Officers stopped him, looked up the bike, discovered it has been reported stolen and arrested him.

► A 40-year-old man was beaten and robbed while he waited for a bus, police said. The man was at a stop for the B12 bus on Clarkson and Flatbush avenues at 1:30 a.m. on Sept. 3 when four men began kicking and punching him. The group fled in a grey Chrysler vehicle after taking a yellow metal chain necklace and $250 in cash.

► A 76-year-old man suffered minor injuries when he was hit in the head with a brick thrown by an unknown suspect. The victim was walking on East New York Avenue near Troy Avenue around 9 p.m. on Sept. 3 when he heard someone yell “Hey!” from behind a fence. Moments later, a brick flew over the fence and hit him in the head. He was treated for minor injuries to his face and head at Kingsbrook Jewish Medical Center.

► A 27-year-old woman lost $1,300 in property in an apartment break-in. The victim said burglars broke into her apartment at 382 Montgomery St. between 9 a.m. and 7 p.m. on Sept. 3 and stole a Macbook Pro laptop, an iPhone 4S, two video games and a PS4 video game controller.

► A 23-year-old woman was robbed of her wallet by a group of men at the corner of Utica Avenue and Eastern Parkway. The woman was standing there around 9 p.m. on Sept. 5 when five men ran up to her, grabbed the wallet from her hand and fled west on Eastern Parkway. The wallet contained no cash, but the victim lost her green card, social security card and residency documents, police said.

► A 35-year-old man was stabbed with a knife in the left arm by at least two suspects on the corner of Utica Avenue and Eastern Parkway at 4 p.m. on Sept. 7. The suspect fled on foot and the victim was treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

► A 41-year-old Uber driver was checking the tire pressure on his car at the corner of Carroll and Ford streets around 2:30 a.m. on Sept. 8 when a male suspect threatened him with a handgun and demanded he hand over cash and property. The victim lost an Uber company cell phone, an iPod, $100 in cash and a black bag. The robber fled on foot.
