SOUTH STREET SEAPORT — To quiet your mind in this yoga class, you'll need a big pair of glowing headphones, and some house music.
Sound Off, a company that organizes “silent discos” across the country, is using its wireless, noise-canceling headsets, along with several DJs, to create a yoga class in the South Street Seaport that shuts out the sounds of the outside world.
Participants in the "silent" Vinyasa-style yoga classes will wear headphones that pump in music from a live DJ, as well as instructions from the teacher's wireless microphone.
"The experience really isolates you from the noise of the outside world," said Sound Off president Castel Valere-Couturier. "It lets you be one with yourself and the music."
Yogis can set the volume on their headphones for the music, a "deep house mix" that is selected by the live DJ in the class, as well as the class instructor, Valere-Couturier said.
The classes, which cost $20, will be held on Feb. 28 and March 3 from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m., inside a heated, inflated tent set up along Fulton Street.
Valere-Couturier said the company hopes to bring the yoga classes outdoors at the Seaport when the weather gets warmer.
