GREENPOINT — A new windscreen and refurbished grounds have proven a treat for dogs and their owners at McCarren Park, whose newly renovated dog has welcomed plenty of four-legged visitors despite the cold.
"It's fantastic, we come to the park three times a day," said Mickelle Daniels of her beagles Dylan and Brooklyn, praising the soft "natural" ground and noting that new trash bags had been hung from the fence.
The dog run's new wood chips, windscreen and logs brought the canines' playtime to the next level last Friday, she said.
"They're more comfortable," Daniels added. "And it's cleaner now."
The renovation, completed this fall, included "excavation, grating and refurbishing, and the installation of a new windscreen," said a spokeswoman for the city's Parks Department.
The run, at the corner of Driggs and Union avenues, is one of the few options for dog owners to take their pets off their leashes in North Brooklyn, locals have said.
Volunteers from the McCarren Park Dog Run Association worked on the project with funding from Proctor & Gamble, officials said. The parks conservancy Open Space Alliance also worked on the run's renovation, said the agency's director, Ed Janoff.
Another run is slated for East River State Park on the Williamsburg waterfront.
