BAY TERRACE — A truck slammed into a tree in Bay Terrace on Wednesday morning, knocking down power lines and leaving 1,700 people without electricity, a spokesman for Con Edison said.

The truck knocked down a tree on Hylan Boulevard, near Ainsworth Avenue, just after 6:30 a.m. It took out power lines attached to the tree, according to the FDNY.

Several traffic lights along Hylan Boulevard and around Bay Terrace and Oakwood were out because of the downed power lines.

The area of customers without power stretched from Hylan Boulevard to Richmond Road, and Mosley to Preston avenues, according to Con Ed.

By 9:30 a.m., nearly half the customers had their power returned. Con Ed expected to restore power to the rest later Wednesday morning.

There were no injuries reported from the crash and officials did not know the cause of the accident, FDNY officials said.
