NEW YORK CITY — The Holland Tunnel will re-open to commuters on Wednesday after being closed for a week due to the effects of Hurricane Sandy, officials announced Tuesday night.

The tunnel, which serves an estimated 91,000 vehicles on an average weekday, will be begin to be fully operational at 5 a.m. Wednesday, according to the offices of Governor Andrew Cuomo and New Jersey Governor Chris Christie.

The tunnel was closed ahead of Hurricane Sandy last week because the tubes are prone to flooding, officials said.

The Brooklyn-Battery and Queens-Midtown tunnels remain closed.
