MANHATTAN — Ex-Giant wide receiver Plaxico Burress walked free from an upstate prison Monday morning after serving 20 months of a two year sentence for gun possession.

"I just want to thank God for bringing me through one of the most trying times in my life," Burress said as he was released at 9 a.m., the New York Post reported.

"It's a beautiful day, it's a beautiful day to get to be reunited with my family and go home for some quality time with them."

The football star was expected to fly to Florida to spend time with his wife and two children.

He left Oneida Correctional Facility, in Rome, NY, wearing a Phillies baseball cap, the Post reported. The Philiadelphia Eagles are one of the teams expected to make him an offer as he looks to return to football.

Burress, 33, who caught the winning touchdown in the Giants' 2007 Super Bowl victory, was released early for good behavior.

He was arrested after a gun tucked into his pants went off in Midtown nightclub Latin Quarter, shooting him in his leg.

He pleaded guilty to attempted criminal possession of a weapon in August 2009.
