MANHATTAN SUPREME COURT — The Manhattan District Attorney's office is laying off 10 assistant prosecutors because of a 25 percent budget cut it's facing, the New York Times reported.

About two percent of the lawyers in DA Cy Vance Jr.'s office are being asked to leave as part of the downsizing, and those who are departing are mostly veterans, the Times said.

The office, which has been headed by Vance Jr. since January, has a total of 535 assistant district attorneys. Between 40 and 80 junior attorneys handle misdemeanors and senior prosecutors are generally assigned to felonies, Vance reported on April 9.

A spokesperson for the District Attorney said the office does not comment on personnel matters and would not confirm the report.
