McKINLEY PARK — A move to a larger, more prominently placed building will allow Aquinas Literacy Center to reach more students, but now it needs the volunteers to fulfill that mission.
The literacy center — which teaches English language courses to adult immigrant communities — moved into its new location at 1751 W. 35th St. in early September after two decades in a nearby church basement.
The new location will allow Aquinas Literacy Center to increase its capacity for instruction, but because all courses are one-on-one, the center needs volunteers to achieve that goal.

Now the center is looking for new volunteer tutors who can help in that effort, the group said in a Facebook post. Currently, there are 46 prospective students on the group's waiting list.
Volunteers will need to commit two hours per week, including 1½ hours of instruction and 30 minutes of preparation, the center said. Knowledge of a second language is not required, since all instruction is in English.
A new tutor training workshop is scheduled for 6-9 p.m. Friday and 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday. The center asks those interested to pre-register by emailing sabrina@aquinasliteracycenter.org or calling 773-927-0512.
