DOWNTOWN — The heated rivalry with the Packers could set a record for the coldest game in Bears history.
Sunday's forecast calls for a high of just below zero, according to Dave Samuhel of AccuWeather. If the forecast reaches only 1 degree, that would break the mark for the most frigid Bears game at Soldier Field.
"It looks like the record will be in trouble. Our forecast is for the temperature to stay just below zero all day. So, the kickoff temperature will likely be somewhere between two above and two degrees below zero," Samuhel said. "There will be 10-15 mph winds, producing AccuWeather RealFeel temperatures around 20 below zero."
The current record was set Dec. 22, 2008, also against the Packers, when the temperature at kickoff was 2 degrees, according to the Tribune, which also noted the coldest recorded wind chill at a home Bears game was minus-15 degrees on Dec. 18, 1983, also versus Green Bay. The Bears won the 2008 game 20-17 in overtime and the 1983 game 23-21.
The coldest game in NFL history was the league's 1967 "Ice Bowl" championship game between Dallas and Green Bay, when temperatures reached minus-13 degrees at Lambeau Field. The wind chill at that game was minus-48 degrees.
The Bears lead their epic rivalry with the Packers, which began in 1921, 94-93-6, but Green Bay has won 11 of the last 13 games.
