Watch Video of Stranded Kitesurfer Rescued By Coast Guard on Lake Michigan

CHICAGO — Unseasonably warm weather and comfortable Lake Michigan temps (65 degrees Tuesday) have prompted people to venture into the water into the fall this year.

But for one man, the pleasant adventure turned treacherous.

The unidentified man was in Lake Michigan on Monday around 6:30 p.m., about a mile off shore from Evanston, when the mast broke on his kitesurfer. The man texted a friend who called the Coast Guard.

The Coast Guard from the Wilmette Harbor station rescued the man, who was wearing a life jacket. The surfer declined medical attention.

"This case highlights that making the right decisions before entering the water can ultimately save your life. The person in distress made good choices by wearing a lifejacket and having a reliable means of communication," Coast Guard Lt. Cmdr. Bryant Swintek said in a statement.
