DOWNTOWN — Red Robin has closed all five of its restaurants Downtown after pushing an aggressive expansion here, according to a published report.

The burger chain shuttered nine of its 12 fast-casual "Burger Works" locations, including five in Chicago, Crain's reported Sunday

The closures affect five Red Robin restaurants here, three of which opened since February 2015:

• 328 N. Michigan Ave.

• 20 E. Chicago Ave.

• 180 N. Wabash Ave.

• 204 N. Wells St.

• 190 W. Madison St.

Red Robin's larger sit-down restaurants in the suburbs are not affected. A spokesman for the burger chain said Red Robin is working to rebrand its smaller stores as "Red Robin Express."

"We will continue to explore smaller units that meet the growing demand for carry out and delivery," Kevin Caulfield, the spokesman, said in an email.
