SAUGANASH — A garage sale raised $2,100 for the family of Chicago Police Officer and PTA leader Kim Walton Zalinski, who died unexpectedly in June.

Zalinski's death left a gaping hole in the fabric of the community surrounding Sauganash Elementary School, where she helped lead the Parent-Teacher Association, friends and teachers said.

The July 23 sale was hosted by the Sauganash Elementary School class of 2019.

Friends raised $17,000 via an online fundraising campaign to help Zalinski's family.

A 19-year veteran of the Chicago Police Department, Zalinski, 44, died unexpectedly June 12. She is survived by her husband, Don, who is also an officer, and her son and daughter.
