LITTLE ITALY —It may be in the 50s this weekend, but that isn't stopping Little Italy's famous frozen lemonade spot from changing its plans to open for the summer season.
Mario's Italian Lemonade, 1068 W. Taylor St., will open for the season Sunday as planned, "regardless of the weather."
The stand has been a mainstay in the neighborhood since 1954, when Mario DiPaolo Jr. helped his parents, Mario Sr. and Dorothy DiPaolo, open the family shop. Today, DiPaolo Jr. continues to operate the stand with his three adult children.
Mario's Italian Lemonade opens for the season every May 1 and closes in September. The stand offers more than a dozen flavors, including pomegranate and watermelon.
In 2014, the DiPaolo family added to their Taylor Street empire when Mario's son Marco DiPaolo opened Mint Clothing, 1058 W. Taylor St., just a few doors down from the family's lemonade stand.
“I would have rather him taken over the lemonade stand, but you know what they say — people in hell want a cold glass of water," Mario DiPaolo said at the time.
