CHICAGO — A website is poking fun at Mayor Rahm Emanuel with a T-shirt that shows a fetus dressed as a police officer and the words "STAY FETAL."
The T-shirt, which the site is selling for $20, features a blue fetus wearing a police officer's crown hat with a checkerboard band. Underneath the fetus, which is sipping on coffee, there are the words, "STAY FETAL." The shirt is the only item offered on the website.
The quotation comes from a controversial statement by Emanuel, who said Chicago Police officers had gone "fetal" after protests against police brutality across the United States. Then-Police Supt. Garry McCarthy said "fetal" wasn't the right phrase to describe what was happening.
The Stay Fetal website claims proceeds from shirt sales will go to the Officer Down Memorial Page, a website which memorializes slain police officers in the United States. Representatives from the Officer Down Memorial Page could not immediately be reached for comment, but the group accepts donations directly on its website and sells its own T-shirts, which honor fallen officers, online.
The owner of the Stay Fetal website could not be reached for comment.
Tribune reporter Peter Nickeas first noted the T-shirt in a tweet.
