THE LOOP — Gov. Bruce Rauner said Monday he'd support Donald Trump if the real-estate tycoon and reality-TV star gains the Republican Party's presidential nomination.

"I will support the Republican Party's nominee for president," Rauner said in a news conference at the Thompson Center. "I'll do everything I can to work with that nominee."

Yet when asked why, Rauner said only, "I'm the leader of the Republican Party in Illinois."

Pressed on what qualities Trump has that would merit his endorsement, Rauner resisted, saying, "I'm not gonna comment in detail about candidates."

He did, however, add that "we should respect the voters' decision" in the 2016 presidential campaign.

"The process is still in midstream," Rauner said. "We should let the process play out."
