DOWNTOWN — A Harold Washington College instructor is being investigated for allegedly writing transphobic remarks on a student's paper.

The student, who is a trans man, submitted a proposal to write a research paper about how transgender people have their rights violated.

"These people don't have rights," the instructor wrote on the proposal, according to the student. "They choose to be transgender. Pick another topic."

The student shared the professor's comments in a post on social media. [Facebook]

City Colleges is investigating an employee for "an allegation of discrimination," said spokeswoman Katheryn Hayes in an email.

"Should we determine any employee engaged in an act of discrimination, appropriate action will be taken," Hayes said.

City Colleges has a zero-tolerance non-discrimination policy, Hayes said. She could not provide further information about the instructor and investigation.

The student could not immediately be reached for comment.
