BEVERLY — Students at Christ the King School in North Beverly teamed up to draw some colorful portraits in celebration of Black History Month.
Art teacher Sandy Washington began by speaking to students about several black leaders while creating an image using her computer and a projector.
From there, the images were transferred to paper and cut into enough sections that each student had a square. They were then instructed to paint the pencil lines using one hue and create different shades of that same color by adding white.
The young artists were encouraged to use as many tints of the same color as possible on their square, said Washington, a North Beverly resident.
After they dried, the portrait was reassembled and glued together on a large sheet. The fourth-grade class created portraits of civil rights activists Rosa Parks and Ruby Bridges.
The fifth-grade class compiled portraits of President Barack Obama and author Maya Angelou. While the sixth-graders depicted Martin Luther King Jr. and trumpeter Louis Armstrong.
