GOLD COAST — Spike Lee, at a press conference for his upcoming "Chi-Raq" film, publicly thanked DNAinfo Chicago for "what you guys do."

In response to a DNAinfo question, the director stopped to say:

"I want to thank [DNAinfo.com] because what you guys do. I know a lot of numbers try to get suppressed. But you guys had the numbers. And so we made many references to your research of the numbers people wounded, people shot every weekend. So I want to say you do a great service for getting the word out."

DNAinfo has tracked violence in Chicago's neighborhoods since the website's launch in 2013. That includes a timeline of murders in Chicago, stories of the dead and a map of shootings (below).
