Woman Charged With Shooting Wildly on Halsted Now Faces Felony (VIDEO)

LINCOLN PARK — A woman allegedly caught on cell phone video this month wildly firing a gun in the air multiple times on Halsted Street as she argued with people is now charged with a felony.

Jennifer Stegall, 32, of Broadview, Illinois, was originally charged with reckless conduct, a misdemeanor.

But that charge has been dropped and replaced with a more serious charge, aggravated discharge of a firearm, according to Steve Campbell, a spokesman for the Cook County State's Attorney's office.

On Wednesday, there was a warrant issued of $50,000 by Judge Marvin Luckman. Stegall is expected to appear in bond court Friday.

The video shows a group of people arguing and shoving each other in the 2600 block of North Halsted Street around 2:10 a.m. on Oct. 10. There are about five gunshots over the course of the two minute and 30 second video, in which the group continues to fight on the sidewalk and shout at each other. No one was injured.

Some residents were outraged when they found out that Stegall was only charged with reckless conduct.

"Misdemeanor is a weak charge, why not 5 attempted murders, one for each bullet discharged on purpose? No wonder our police complain about lack of consequences for violent perpetrators. This is sad," one commenter wrote on Neighborhood Square, DNAinfo Chicago's commenting platform.

Another wrote: "Why only a misdemeanor, this is what's wrong with our city and its laws. Someone could have been killed, she was shooting on a busy street. Should have been attempted murder. This is nuts!"

The updated charges was first reported by the blog Crime in Wrigleyville + Boystown.
