CHICAGO — Brian Tobe's ties to Chicago came in handy last weekend — beyond the training he got at the Pritzker School of Medicine.

It gave him something to talk about when President Barack Obama stumbled upon Tobe's San Diego-area golf course wedding on Sunday.

Tobe, who has an MD and a Phd from the University of Chicago, was getting ready for his wedding at the The Lodge at Torrey Pines in La Jolla, Calif. — the same place where the president was golfing.

When a wedding photographer alerted the couple — who were in the lodge preparing for the outdoor wedding planned for a spot near the 18th hole — that the president was walking up the course, "I picked up my wedding dress and just started running down the hall," Stephanie told ABC News.

Obama spotted the couple and the three posed for photos. Brian, who is a psychiatrist at the Veterans Administration hospital in San Diego, said they chatted about Brian's work and their shared connection to the University of Chicago, where Obama once taught law.

Obama had some advice.

"He pointed out that my foot was actually on the train or the trail of her wedding dress on the ground and he said, I don’t remember his exact words, but he’s so relaxed, and he says nope, nope you know ... you can’t step on the wedding dress,” the groom said.

"I think it was our first marriage advice," Brian said.

Stephanie's aunt Judy, who would be officiating at the wedding, invited Obama to take over the duties. He declined.
