WEST RIDGE — A new dollar store is coming to West Ridge, where it will take over a building with a history of city violations, records show.
Dollar Station will set up digs at 2900 W. Devon Ave., a storefront that has sat empty since Moshe's New York Kosher Sausage deli closed in recent years.
On Oct. 2, a business license was issued to Avadis Sarkissan to open a Dollar Station, a discount store that would also sell tobacco products.
The new dollar store would sit along Ald. Debra Silverstein's Devon Avenue Streetscape project announced in 2012 and aimed to "make Devon safer, brighter, greener and more beautiful."
Once the kosher eatery closed, however, the building quickly fell into disrepair. City inspectors found numerous building code violations throughout the property owned by Devon Realty President Peter Spyropoulos.
Aside from broken glass, rusted pipes, peeling paint and general "junk," inspectors found an abandoned toilet and water damage from a leaking roof. They also ticketed Syropoulos for keeping gasoline and gas-powered yard equipment within the commercial building.
In June, Spyropoulos was sued by the city and ordered to pay a $5,000 fine per day until the violations were corrected.
On Aug. 20, inspectors indicated the building passed their tests.
