ROSCOE VILLAGE — A group of Lane Tech alumni have been given the OK to restore the high school's totem pole, with a target to start work in the spring.
The artwork, which was created by senior classes during the mid-80s, has rusted, some of its paint is peeling and it's obscured by surrounding trees. Alumni have called for months for it to be repaired, but it wasn't until this week that they were given permission by the school to restore the statue.
"At the moment, we are working on getting a more realistic cost estimate and will commence fundraising [and soliciting in-kind donations] soon," alumnus Walter Brzeski wrote in a Facebook group dedicated to restoring the statue. "Because the season for doing the work is rapidly closing, we are targeting the spring for the actual work."
The restoration will be a joint project between alumni, students, faculty, staff and parents, Brzeski wrote.
