STREETERVILLE — Some of Chicago's fanciest towers are competing in a contest based on what passersby see down at street level.

Voting for the Streeterville Organization of Active Residents' (SOAR) annual Beautification Awards will last online through Aug. 19. The contest, which has been held more than 20 years, encourages Streeterville landlords to soften streetscapes in the high-rise haven.

"It makes it feel a lot more like a neighborhood," organization President Gail Spreen said. "In certain buildings that have more extensive work it creates kind of little pocket parks."

Awards will be be given to residential, commercial, and "institutional" buildings such as Northwestern Memorial Hospital. Spreen said winners from the "past few years" are ineligible in order to encourage new landscaping.
