BACK OF THE YARDS — The Plant, the non-profit urban farming facility and green food incubator in the Stockyards Industrial Park, has a new executive director.

Jonathan Pereira comes to Plant Chicago after serving as youth program manager for Greencorps Chicago, the city's green industry training program.

“The sheer ambition of the space is amazing,” Pereira said of the The Plant, at 1400 W. 46th St., the former home of a meatpacking facility. “It’s a very exciting place.”

Going forward, Pereira hopes to expand The Plant’s outreach programs and “spreading the word” to surrounding communities.

Pereira holds degrees in geology and Spanish from Bates College and is studying for master’s degree in science education from the University of Illinois at Chicago.

Founded in 2011, The Plant conducts research and demonstrates technology in the field of closed-loop food production.
