DOWNTOWN — Chicago rapper Lupe Fiasco will don a spooky costume and lead a new Halloween parade Downtown on Saturday, Oct. 24, in an event descibed as an event "unlike any other in Chicago."
The Grammy winner and East Garfield Park native, along with filmmaker Steve James and others, are the "Creative Spirit Fellows" for the inaugural "Halloween Gathering on the Chicago Cultural Mile."
The fellows will wear costumes and lead the gathering's premier event, a parade stepping off at 6 p.m. that day with "hundreds of performers" marching along Columbus Drive from Balbo Drive to Monroe Street.
"Think of them as grand marshals, but our version of it," said Mark Kelly, the event's creative director and vice president of student success at Columbia College Chicago. "This is going to be a parade unlike any other in Chicago."
The event will also include a separate kids' costume parade, zombie "Thriller" dance, mask-making, free dance and theater performances, and more. The activities will begin at 2 p.m.
Events will be at Millennium Park, Maggie Daley Park, and Congress Plaza at Michigan Ave and Congress. See here for a detailed list of events.
Born Wasalu Jaco, Fiasco — who's also a painter — released his latest album in January. Kelly said the fellows chosen are "driving forces" in Chicago art and creativity.
