DOWNTOWN — Chicago might not have any mountains Downtown, but the next best thing will open in Maggie Daley Park Tuesday, just in time for climbing season.
Officially named the Malkin-Sacks Rock Climbing Walls, the 40-foot structure in Maggie Daley Park features a total surface area of 19,000 square feet and can accommodate between 25 and 100 climbers at one time, according to a release from the Chicago Park District.
Climbing costs $7 per day or $55 for a monthly pass, and equipment can be rented at the Maggie Daley Park Fieldhouse for $15. Climbers are also allowed to use their own equipment.
First-time climbers must attend a certification class before climbing. Bouldering certification costs $15 and climbing certification costs $29. Belay buddies are encouraged, but staff will be on-site to help, the park district said.
“Regardless of the season, this park provides an informal place for recreation and relaxation alongside a connective landscape that will broaden the appeal of Grant Park as a whole," Park District Supt. Michael Kelly said in a statement.
