DOWNTOWN — Ain't daylights savings fun? Though there's a lot of bad stuff that occurs after DST goes into effect, one good thing — at least for we here at DNAinfo, anyway — is there's also an increase in "cyber-loafing," says the Christian Science Monitor in this report.
Loaf-away, friends:
Star Trek the Concert: “Beyond the rim of the star-light/My love is wand’ring in star flight.” What? You don’t know the words to the theme song for the original Star Trek? Billboard reports that “Star Trek: The Ultimate Voyage,” a live musical performance with video clips of all things Trek, will be touring the U.S. in 2016. No word yet on whether it’ll stop in Chicago but, c’mon, it’s a 100-city tour. And about that theme song? Andrew Herrmann recommends the obit of the composer Alexander Courage, who claimed series creator Gene Roddenberry made up the lyrics so Roddenberry could take 50 percent of the royalties. It’s hilariously horrible. Listen here.
That’s a lot of cheese: The apparently all-powerful pizza lobby contributed $1.5 million to political candidates during the past two election cycles in an attempt to avoid menu-labeling and new federal nutrition rules for school lunches, David Matthews read in Bloomberg Business. So far, the lobbying has been successful, with some proposed pizza regulations delayed or dropped, and others facing repeal in a GOP-controlled Congress. “Pizza is, like, the greatest food in America,” said Joe Clayton, executive director of the National Frozen Pizza Institute. Republicans, led by Mitt Romney with $110,807, received 88 percent of the pizza money.
“On Running and Street Harassment:” In honor of International Women’s Day over the weekend (and the exercising-outside weather we’re supposed to have this week), Kyla Gardner is rereading this rage-inducing but empowering essay in The Toast by Chicago writer and runner Katie Prout, in which she reflects on whether or not to talk back to the men who yell at her as she moves through the city’s streets.
