CHICAGO  -- Schoolchildren in Chicago will get a snow day Monday, Chicago Public School announced Sunday evening.

The decision was announced Sunday as double-digit inches of snow piled up around the neighborhoods.

“The National Weather Service updated its forecast early Sunday evening to indicate the city could receive up to an additional five inches of snow by midnight, in addition to the 14 inches of snow already received,” said CPS CEO Barbara Byrd-Bennett in a statement. “This level of snowfall will present many challenges for our children. Out of an abundance of caution, and so parents have time to prepare, we are cancelling classes for Monday. The safety and well-being of our students always comes first.”

As much as 14 inches of snow fell on Chicago Sunday.

CPS buildings will remain open for students who arrive. Administrative and custodial staff will be on hand.
