EDGEBROOK — Summer may seem tortuously far away, but if you plan on taking a picnic lunch to a prime spot in the Cook County Forest Preserves, you'll have to act fast after ringing in the New Year.

For the last several years, permits for groups of 25 to take over a popular spot on a holiday weekend have been snapped up as soon as the permits go up for sale both online and in person, officials said.

Permits go on sale at 8 a.m. Jan. 2 online and at the district's headquarters, 536 N. Harlem Ave., River Forest, where doors will open at 7 a.m. for early birds to begin lining up. Permits range from $47 to $115, but special event permits may cost more, officials said.

Forest preserve officials encourage those planning to buy a permit to set up an online account at fpdcc.com/permits-rentals ahead of time to boost their chances of getting a permit for the time and place of their choosing, especially on holidays.
