CHICAGO — It just got a lot harder to park in the city.
The winter overnight parking ban went into effect early Monday.
Chicago drivers should be on the lookout for signs that ban parking on "critical arterial" streets from 3 a.m. to 7 a.m., Ald. Brendan Reilly (42nd) warned his constituents.
Violators may get slammed with a $150 (minimum) towing fee, $60 ticket and a daily storage fee of $20. Cars will be towed to auto pounds at either 10301 S. Doty Ave. or 701 N. Sacramento Ave.
Last year, the city towed 239 cars on the morning of Dec. 1 compared with 301 towed the year before, according to Department of Streets and Sanitation spokeswoman Molly Poppe.
To find out where the signs are, check this map of affected streets. According to Reilly, 107 miles of city streets are considered "critical arterial" streets.
The ban, which remains in effect whether it snows or not, ends April 1.
The year-round ban on parking on snow routes remains in effect. On those arterial streets, signs restrict parking when there is more than 2 inches of snow on the ground.
