MCKINLEY PARK — The arrival of cold temperatures means it's time for the green thumbs at the McKinley Park Community Garden to start packing it in for the winter.
But before they go, the group is inviting the community to the garden for a sale of its newly harvested honey, which comes direct from the garden's modest beekeeping operation, which started earlier this year with help from Jana Kinsman's Bike a Bee project.
The garden cleanup party and honey sale takes place 9:30-11:30 a.m. Saturday at the garden, located in the 1900 block of West Pershing Road.
"It's been kind of an experiment ... hopefully it goes well and hopefully we can continue it," said Theresa Cassilas, 39, whose husband Erasmo, an experienced beekeeper tended to the garden's beehives.
About eight gallons of honey was extracted from the beehives this year. It will be sold for $7 in half-pint jars and the proceeds will be sent to the two-year-old urban garden.
