ROGERS PARK — Surfer Dave Kehnast braved one of the coldest days of the season Friday to catch a few waves at Loyola Park.

But the surfing didn't go as well as expected.

"It's sloppy," said the 39-year-old of the waves. "Tomorrow will be a lot better, when the wind dies down."

Ben Woodard says surfing on the Far North Side is rare:

Kehnast, who usually surfs the beaches on the north side of the neighborhood, closer to his home, was spotted lugging his 9-foot-long surfboard down Sheridan Road, dressed in a wetsuit, about noon.

The National Weather Service issued three warnings for the area, cautioning about lakefront wind gusts of up to 60 mph until 6 p.m.

"Battering" waves also could reach a height of 23 feet, the weather service stated.
