CHICAGO — Some Chicagoans looking for a rare chance to get city housing assistance ran into a few snags Monday afternoon.

The Chicago Housing Authority’s website for people looking to register for a chance to be placed on a housing wait list went down for thirty minutes after debuting Monday.

As of 3:30 p.m., CHA’s general website remained down, but the wait list site was functioning again.

CHA is offering a lottery for Chicagoans to get on the wait lists for family public housing, tenant based housing choice vouchers (formerly section 8), and property rental assistance. After November 27th, names will be randomly drawn for inclusion on each of the three wait lists.

A staff e-mail said that the website was not working due to the large volume of people logging onto the CHA website.

This is the first time the CHA is opening registration to all three wait lists at the same time. According to CHA sources, there were 200,000 registrants on the Family Public Housing wait list four years ago. The Housing Choice Voucher waitlist was last opened six years ago.
