WICKER PARK — Big Star's much-anticipated patio expansion appears to be inching closer.
Construction trucks were seen on adjacent parking lot, the site of Big Star's future patio add-on, where work on the asphalt began Friday.
Big Star, 1531 N. Damen Ave., has been planning a patio and kitchen expansion for more than a year.
The restaurant has taken over the neighboring building 1537 N. Damen Ave., which will allow it to add a commissary kitchen to help the restaurant keep up with demand for catering and festival food, Big Star spokeswoman Jenna Liberman said.
To help accommodate customers wanting a taco for the road, Big Star is moving its to-go window to the new kitchen.
The taco and margarita spot often draws big lines and lengthy wait times during the summer for patrons hoping to snag a seat on the patio, which has room for 123 people.
The restaurant declined to discuss further plans for the patio expansion, including when it might be finished.
