LAKEVIEW — The weekend shooting at an Ashland Avenue gas station wounded a man across the street, but one of the bullets also entered an apartment — landing in a wall above a sleeping 11-year-old boy.
Ketty B., the boy's mother who asked that her last name not be used, had just returned to her apartment on Ashland from her job as a bartender when she heard the series of gunshots, she said.
Ketty's mother ran out of the front bedroom, yelling, "'Oh my God, oh my God, oh my God, I'm going to get killed!'" Ketty recalled this week.
A bullet shot through their window, ripped through the wall several feet above her mother's bed and then went into the living room, landing in the wall above the couch where her 11-year-old son was lying.
"It's so scary, and it's so awful," Ketty said.
The family moved to Lakeview from Humboldt Park less than a year ago "to not have to deal with this," she said.
"There are parts in Humboldt Park where people are literally desensitized," she said. "To come to Lakeview, one of the most affluent rental markets and to have to deal with the same thing ...
"Then again, it's the city."
Downstairs, a 26-year-old man, who was a patron at bar Tai's Til 4, 3611 N. Ashland Ave., was hit in the eye while standing outside around 3 a.m. He was not the intended target and is now in stable condition, officials said.
Officials said that the bullets flew during a memorial for a gang member who was killed two years ago at the gas station at 3600 N. Ashland Ave.
Max Vallejo, 26, was a tow truck driver and Latin Eagles member who died after an argument with a man allegedly affiliated with the Spanish Gangster Disciples, according to Vallejo's father.
Officials said the shooting during the memorial is an isolated incident.
