CHICAGO — A man who jumped into Lake Michigan to save his dog was rescued near Uptown's Montrose Point Tuesday evening, authorities said.

The incident occurred at 5:15 p.m. when a man in his 40s who was walking three dogs lost control of one of them who went into the lake, said Chief Verdi Allen, a fire department spokeswoman.

The man was pulled to safety with the help of a rope and the police department's marine unit. He was taken to Weiss Memorial Hospital in serious-to-critical condition, Allen said.

All three dogs were taken to a veterinarian and are expected to survive, officials said.
