EDGEWATER — Whole Foods will open at least four stores in locations formerly occupied by Dominick's, officials said Friday.

The sites are in Edgewater, Lincoln Park, Streeterville and the West Loop.

Whole Foods will lease the site at 6009 North Broadway.

"It is my understanding that Whole Foods will be making a significant financial investment in the building and plans to open in early 2015," said Ald. Harry Osterman (48th) in an email to constituents Friday.

Osterman said he would keep the neighborhood updated on renovation plans.

Ald. Brendan Reilly (42nd) confirmed the grocer will open stores at 1 N. Halsted St. in the West Loop and 225 E. Grand Ave., in Streeterville.

Crain's reported another store will open at 959 W. Fullerton Ave. in Lincoln Park.

A spokeswoman for Whole Foods declined to comment about the planned new stores, but said that it typically takes about a year for the company to convert an existing store into a Whole Foods.

A spokesperson for Safeway, the parent company of Dominick's, couldn't be reached for comment.

The much-anticipated news in Edgewater comes after Mariano's announced in December that it would move into Edgewater's other empty Dominick's store, at Foster Avenue and Sheridan Road.

Osterman also announced Friday that Mariano's would open a "hiring center" across the street from the future store, where prospective workers can apply and interview for jobs.

Osterman said he and Mariano's plan to host a job fair at the end of February.

Mariano's plans to open within the next 45 days, according to a spokeswoman.

"The addition of Whole Foods and Mariano's contributes to the already fantastic mix of grocery options in the 48th Ward," he said.

Dominick's parent company, Safeway, Inc., closed all of its Chicago area stores last month.

Cermak Fresh Market announced three weeks ago that it planned to open in a former Dominick's location at 6623 N. Damen Ave. in West Rogers Park and the Dominick's in suburban Lincolnwood.

Rogers Park's former Dominick's at the Gateway Shopping Centre on Howard Street has yet to be claimed by a tenant.
