HYDE PARK — Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick will give the annual address for Martin Luther King Day at the University of Chicago on Jan. 15.
Patrick will speak at 6 p.m. at Rockefeller Chapel, 5850 S. Woodlawn Ave., where King gave one of his first speeches in Chicago in 1956. The King holiday is celebrated on the third Monday in January, this year on Jan. 20.
Patrick grew up just blocks from campus, near 54th Street and Wabash Avenue. He later went on to Harvard University after getting a scholarship to Milton Academy in Massachusetts.
Before winning the gubernatorial election in 2006, he was assistant attorney general for civil rights.
The event is free and open to the public.
On Jan. 18, historian Timuel Black will lead a seminar at the university and a bus tour on King's legacy in Chicago.
