EDGEWATER — Mariano's Fresh Market has bought the Dominick's location at Sheridan Road and Foster Avenue, the company announced Monday.

The grocer bought an additional 10 stores, as well, including two others within city limits, at 3145 S. Ashland Ave. and 2021 W. Chicago Ave.

The future of Edgewater's other Dominick's, at 6009 North Broadway, and several others within the city, is uncertain.

Ald. Harry Osterman (48th) said that he had been in contact with representatives from the most likely potential buyers of Dominick's stores, including Mariano's, Trader Joe's and Whole Foods.

Mariano's parent company, Roundy's Inc., issued a statement Monday announcing its acquisition of the stores and said it would close the $36 million deal by the end of December.

Current Dominick's employees aren't guaranteed a job in the transition. A spokesman for Roundy's said Dominick's employees "will still have to be interviewed, hired and trained for new opportunities at Mariano's."

The stores scheduled for conversion to Mariano's will close for up to 45 days. That's when prospective employees can apply online or at forthcoming job fairs.

Safeway Inc., Dominick's parent company, plans to close all unsold stores by the end of December.
