ROGERS PARK — New Field Elementary School Principal Susan Kilbane has taken a one-month "leave of absence," officials said.

Craig Benes, the chief of elementary schools for the Chicago Public Schools' Ravenswood-Ridge Network, said in a letter dated Oct. 9 to parents that "due to unforeseen circumstances" Kilbane would be temporarily leaving the school.

"Everyone here loves and supports Susan," said kindergarten teacher Joe Dickinson, who said the faculty was informed of Kilbane's plan to "take a break" at a recent meeting.

Acting Principal Carlos Patino said at a local school council meeting Tuesday that Kilbane was in her fifth year as principal.

"It's a personal leave," he said. "I fully expect her back."

Both Kilbane and Chicago Public Schools didn't immediately respond to requests for comment.
