EDGEWATER — A drive-thru Starbucks made of reused shipping containers served its first weekday customers Monday.
The building, at the southwest corner of Devon Avenue and Broadway, only serves drive-thru and walk-up customers. It was prefabricated in California and assembled in a matter of weeks on the lot formerly occupied by an Edgewater hot dog stand, store manager Andrew Hinkle said.
Hinkle said the store had a soft opening Saturday, and a grand opening — with Starbucks "top brass" — was scheduled for noon-3 p.m. Tuesday.
Starbucks is hoping to attract Far North Side commuters heading to and from Lake Shore Drive at the 6350 Broadway location.
Ald. Harry Osterman's 48th Ward office said this type of structure for Starbucks is only found in a few other U.S. cities, such as Portland, Ore., Denver and Seattle.
