CHICAGO — Former Chicago Bears wide receiver David Terrell, the team's top pick in the 2001 draft, was hit with felony drug charges after being arrested in Bronzeville Friday, police said.
He was also charged with battery for allegedly injuring a police officer during his arrest.
Officers were responding to a call of three people smoking pot in an apartment building in the 3900 block of South Calumet Avenue about 1:30 p.m. Friday.
After they began questioning Terrell at the scene, he struck an officer's hand and was arrested for the attack, police said.
As he was being arrested, the former Michigan Wolverines star resisted and injured the officer, police said.
Two people with Terrell were also arrested, and police say marijuana and related materials were in the apartment "in plain view."
Terrell, who lives in the 1800 block of South Calumet in the South Loop, was charged with manufacturing and delivering cannabis and misdemeanor battery.
Terrell was drafted by the Bears with the eighth overall pick in 2001. He signed a four-year, $14.75 million contract with a $7 million signing bonus.
He did not live up to expectations, however, and was cut by the team after the 2004 season.
He later had stints with the New England Patriots and the Denver Broncos and is now out of the NFL.
