CHICAGO — Ald. James Cappleman (46th) was called a "faggot alderman" on the street Wednesday, the gay City Council member tweeted.

"Today, a guy on the street called me a faggot alderman. People are taught bigotry, which explains the resistance to pass marriage equality," Cappleman said in the tweet.

Cappleman has been a vocal supporter of marriage equality in Illinois, which lawmakers failed to vote on during their session in May.

Cappleman wasn't immediately available Wednesday to elaborate on his run-in, but an aide said it's not the first time it's happened.

"I've been out with the alderman, and we've both been called that or similar things before, so it's doesn't surprise me," said Chris Jessup, who is also gay.
