BRIDGEPORT — The organizers behind a community garden project have scrapped their weekend dig-up in favor of a bigger beautification effort.
But the whole thing is on hold, at least for now.
Originally slated for Saturday morning, the planting event was a project from the nonprofit Worker’s Education Society and representatives with the Chicago Public Library’s Richard J. Daley branch.
“We’re postponing a couple of days to get some paperwork in order,” said John Buchtell, with the worker’s education group.
The groups had hoped to transform the vacant lot between the library, 3400 S. Halsted St., and the new Save-A-Lot grocery store, into a community garden.
Now, it looks like produce won’t be a part of the mix. In its place, organizers said, would be flowers and other decorative elements planted to spruce up the lot.
“That’s better than nothing,” said Daley branch director Jeremy Kitchen.
Last month, residents organized a neighborhood cleanup effort that in part aimed to highlight the lack of trash cans along Halsted Street.
