CHICAGO — Full-day kindergarten is coming to all Chicago Public Schools starting next school year, officials said Monday.

In the last two years, CPS has increased the number of kindergartners in full-day classes by 6,000 to 26,500. Next year the school system will provide full-day classes to all 30,700 children in kindergarten classrooms, officials said.

“Guaranteeing full-day kindergarten for the first time gives every student a full education from the very start," Mayor Rahm Emanuel said. "From early learning on up through college, we are making smart, critical investments that support our students’ bright futures."

The $15 million initiative will be funded by spending cuts in CPS administrative offices and energy savings, officials said.

State law does not require districts to offer full-day kindergarten classes.
