CHICAGO — A record number of students will soon receive acceptance letters from Chicago Public Schools' selective enrollment high schools, CPS said in a statement Friday.
CPS has sent out 4,340 offer letters to fill the 3,200 seats at its 10 selective enrollment schools. About 18,000 applications were submitted, according to the statement.
There are 335 more freshman seats available at the 10 selective enrollment schools for the 2013-2014 school year.
"This is an historic moment for CPS, as we continue to increase the number of high-quality options for our students across the district," CPS CEO Barbara Byrd-Bennett said in a statement.
The selective high school admissions process, which begins each fall, requires students to take admissions tests, submit an application and rank their school choices.
Students who weren't accepted may still have a chance to get in to a selective enrollment school under the Principal's Discretion Application program.
The program allows principals to hand-pick 5 percent of the incoming freshman class. The application process opens in February, and takes into account students' awards and honors, letters of recommendation and a written personal statement.
