CHICAGO — Two Chicago Public Schools charter schools were recommended for closure Thursday due to poor performance.
CPS CEO Barbara Byrd-Bennett recommended Aspira Charter's Mirta Ramirez campus and Betty Shabazz Charter's Dusable campus be closed in a phase-out process that would let current students graduate.
The city's 12 charter school operators are assessed for contract renewal based on contract compliance, charter governance, history of fiscal management, academic growth, test scores and parent input, according to a CPS statement.
The Dusable campus, in Grand Boulevard, and Betty Shabazz campus, in Humboldt Park, were found to be low-performing, the statement said.
Byrd-Bennett said every school needs to be held accountable for how it serves children's education.
"These are tough choices, but they must be made in order to help our children succeed," she said.
CPS also recommended charter school operators Aspira and Betty be held to stricter performance benchmarks in future reviews, the statement said.
The CPS Board will make a final vote on closures for performance issues and contract renewals Wednesday.
