University of Illinois Chicago's Air. Water. Earth. is a three-week day camp and hands-on summer program that teaches science in an accessible, enjoyable, and collaborative environment by integrating classroom activities and outdoor experiences. Designed for campers entering sixth and seventh grades this fall, its interactive curriculum is engaging, and applies STEM concepts (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) to our natural world. The program was developed using Next Generation Science Standards to advance critical thinking skills through lessons and activities that connect computer science, reading, writing, art, and math to science. By focusing on three main themes, air, water, and earth, campers learn ecology, collect data and outdoor specimens, and explore local natural history. Drawing young outdoor enthusiasts from the South and West Loop, Downtown, Pilsen, Bridgeport, Bronzeville, University Village, and beyond, UIC’s STEM Summer Youth Camp helps them gain confidence, develop problem solving skills, meet new friends, and practice teamwork — all while fostering a lifelong love of science.
